Engineering Management meetup hosts speakers from Google and Emil Frey Digital

Filip Šišić, Marko Velić, Josip Mlakar

Team leaders, programmers, scrum masters and students came together on Wednesday evening (Feb 19) for the renowned Engineering Management Meetup hosted by the Faculty of Organization and Informatics (FOI). Held in Varaždin for the first time, the event offered valuable thoughts and best practices in leading engineering teams, straight from top IT professionals.

From recruitment and onboarding to individual and team development, engineering managers have an important role. Sharing from their own experiences, Marko Velić (Google) dove into the Silicon Valley approach, while Filip Šišić (Google) highlighted the importance of one-to-one meetings as the most important tool for every leader. Josip Mlakar of Emil Frey Digital took the stage to share more about his journey from supporting a Scrum Master to stepping into team lead role.

Josip explained how introducing a team lead role improves communication and makes responsibilities within the team clearer. He also touched on the importance of regular one-on-one feedback and tools like Jira and Confluence, which help with productivity tracking, decision-making, and process improvement. These initiatives contribute to team cooperation, transparency and long-term success of the organization, he said.

This was our first speech in the Engineering Management Meetup which, initiated by a group of enthusiasts at Photomath, started three years ago in Zagreb. Today, it is one of the most popular tech meetups in the community.
