FOI Career Week 2025: Inside the role of an Automation Engineer

What does an Automation Engineer (AE) do, and why is it one of the most in-demand roles in the IT industry today? Marta Šostarec Ćosić, Frontend Chapter Team Lead, and Kristijan Oberling, System Team Lead, tackled these questions at the workshop they held at FOI’s Career Week.

Titled The role of an Automation Engineer in software development, it was a 90-minute session describing a typical day of an AE in our company and showing examples of end-to-end (E2E) automated tests. Fifteen third-year FOI students took part. Like in previous years, the number of seats was limited, and students booked them right after registrations opened.

Marta and Kristijan explained what an AE does in software development (things like deployment, configuration, alerting) and which tools they use, such as Cypress and Playwright. They showed how to design, build, and maintain E2E tests using Playwright, and shared best practices for working with this modern framework for automated testing.

Also, they walked students through E2E test examples to explain basic syntax, test structure, how selectors work (XPath, CSS, custom attributes), and how to use test data. Then came the most engaging part, where students got to extend an existing test and run it themselves. This gave them practical insight into how software functionality is verified and why automated testing is important in everyday work.

We loved seeing the interest and energy from future IT professionals. Hopefully, they left with a better understanding of what it’s like to be an AE and a bit of excitement for what’s ahead. See you next year!
